Why should children learn first aid?

It is important to be aware that in 2020, teaching first aid became a compulsory part of the National Curriculum for PSHE in primary schools. But why should children learn first aid?

It is extremely beneficial for a child to learn first aid, as there are a number of scenarios in which first aid skills could be used, for example, if a child walked into a room and saw a parent or carer laying on the floor unresponsive, they could call for help, place them in the recovery position or even perform CPR

As well as performing first aid themselves, the child may be able to instruct another person to perform a first aid technique if they were unable to do so themselves.

6 great reasons, why children should learn first aid:

  1. First aid helps children to become more risk aware and in the process helps to keep themselves safe

  2. Learning first aid can boost a child's skills and confidence

  3. It can help a child save a life by giving simple but effective first aid

  4. First aid helps children to stay safe and save lives in emergency situations

  5. First aid is actually fun

  6. First aid builds on fine motor skills
