It is important to understand what mental health is. It is important to know that Mental health includes emotional psychological, and social well-being. Our mental health affects how we feel, think, and act. It will also greatly affect how we handle stress, make choices and relate to other people. Everyone, whether good or bad. has mental health.
The World Health Organisation (W.H.O) defines health as the following ‘ Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and ill-health'.
The World Health Organisation (W.H.O) defines mental health as he following ‘ Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productivity and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community’.
The term mental illness does cover a large range of mental health problems. These mental health problems may affect our emotions, thoughts, relationships with other people, and behavior. Mental illnesses are associated with a person’s distress and problems functioning in their day-to-day living. This everyday life includes social, family, and work amongst other things.
There are different types of mental illnesses, some are more common and some are not. Some of the more common mental illnesses include anxiety disorders and depression, whereas less common ones include bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Mental illness like any condition that affects health, may cause disability which may be severe. This is not always well understood, especially by someone who has not experienced a mental illness.
So what is a mental health issue? A mental health issue is a much broader term encompassing both mental illnesses and mental health-related crises. A crisis could include thoughts of suicide.
