Can I give medications as a paediatric first aider?

One of the questions I frequently get asked when delivering our paediatric first aid training courses is- 'Can I give medications as a paediatric first aider?' to help answer this I have designed this help guide so you can make an informed decision.

Paragraph 3.45 of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) states that ‘medicines must not usually be administered unless they have been prescribed’. This means that it must not be usual practice for an early years provider to administer medicines without permission to do so and not that all medicines, both prescription and non-prescription have to have been prescribed for a child by a doctor, dentist, nurse, or pharmacist. For example, a provider cannot decide for themselves that a particular child needs to have a pain or fever reliever.

Before you agree to give any medicine on behalf of a parent or legal guardian you should ensure the following:

• The child’s parent or legal guardian has provided written and signed consent that includes clear instructions, dosages, and timings

• The instructions from the parent regarding dosages and timings should match that of the pharmacy label or packaging

• The medicine MUST be supplied by the parent or guardian in its original packaging

• It should be recorded in writing both the time and dosage each time you administer a medication. It is advisable that the parent reads and signs this when they collect the child

• The medicine should be stored in a safe place out of sight and reach of children

• You should keep all medicine records safe and secure in case they are required at a later date

• Some medications, (for example injections), will require specific training from a qualified medical professional. This will need to be arranged PRIOR to the child being left in your care.
